french president emmanuel macron issued an ultimatum to the country's muslim leaders for 15 days. during this time they must adopt the "charter of republican values."
this is reported by bbc on thursday 19 november.
as noted, the macron terms put forward by the french council of muslim faith (cfcm) are part of a widespread crackdown on radical islam following a series of terrorist attacks that swept across the country.
according to the charter, islam is a religion, not a political movement, and "foreign interference" in the activities of muslim groups will be prohibited.
in addition, it is reported that in the evening the president and the minister of the interior, gerald darmanen, met with eight cfcm leaders at the elysee palace.
"two principles will be written in black and white in the charter: renunciation of political islam and any foreign interference," one source said after the meeting.
at the same time, cfcm representatives agreed to establish a national council of imams. this body will issue official accreditation to imams, which can be revoked in case of violation of the code of ethics.
after that macron announced new measures to combat "islamist separatism" in france. this is a massive bill aimed at preventing radicalization. it provides for restrictions on homeschooling and harsher penalties for those who intimidate officials on religious grounds.
also, each child will be assigned an identification number that will be used to secure school attendance. parents who break the law face up to six months in prison and heavy fines.
the bill should be discussed in the cabinet of ministers of france on december 9.
